Winter is here! For some us that that doesn’t instantly make us feel good and for others they begin to thrive in the cold weather.  I’m the former but since moving to Canberra I’ve embraced the seasons and found ways to cultivate a nice relationship with Winter.

It’s important to find what works for you. What makes you feel good?

Find the things that are enjoyable for you and find time for them. Embrace them.

These are the 4 main things I focus on to keep me happy in Winter…

1. Movement. I must keep my body moving during the cold months. The less I move the more I feel the cold. The more I move the better I feel emotionally – I don’t tend to get the Winer blues if I’m doing some regular exercise. I go for an {almost} daily walk. Even when it’s freezing outside I layer up with my parker, beanie, gloves and scarf and get outside. I also go snow-shoeing (hiking in the snow) whenever I can. I’m lucky enough to live only a few hours drive to the mountains so I can get out and enjoy the beauty of Winter while getting a great workout. Connecting to nature really helps me at all times of the year to reset and deeply calm my mind, body and soul.

2. Nourishing Food. Warming, nourishing foods help keep me energised during Winter. I love soups and smaller hearty meals that aren’t too heavy. I also love spices like ginger and cinnamon to warm me up and boost my immune system. When I eat well I’m more motivated to move and less likely to hibernate on the couch.

3. Connection. It’s easy to stay at home in the warmth during winter but it’s so important to get out and stay connected with our family and friends. It can seem like a huge effort, but believe me when you get dressed, get out and spend time with those you love you’ll feel a whole lot better.

4. Aromatherapy is a lovely way to support your mind, body and soul through any season. Essential oils can help to harmonise and warm your mind, body and soul during Winter.  I’ve created a beautiful Winter Harmony blend of orange, geranium, patchouli and ginger to use in my Winter Signature Treatment. Here’s a little bit about each of these delightful oils…

Winter Harmony essential oil blend

A delightful blend designed to to infuse joy and creativity, bring blance and strength, warmth and confidence and to integrate the energies of mind body and soul.

ORANGE is for joy and giving vitality and radiance to mind and body. It enhances positive energy, enthusiasm, inspiration and creativity. It allows you to unwind & de-stress, releasing anxiety, frustration and depression and allowing relaxation to wash over you. It also helps the perfectionist to take a more easy going approach! It is very useful if you are feeling sadness, apathy or loss of hope by strengthening the soul and bringing  a light-heartedness to your life. It helps create joy, love, communication and pleasure in your day, bringing with it self-assurance, courage and happiness

GERANIUM is for balance and strength. It assists the nervous system, helping to relieve stress & depression. It is also excellent for feelings of anxiety, overwhelm, indecisiveness and self doubt.  It is fortifying, comforting and calming, enhancing contentment, confidence and the ability to change. It balances hormones and soothes emotional stress while strengthening and balancing the mind.

PATCHOULI grounds and integrates the energy between mind, body and soul. It is very grounding and deeply calming, creating a true sense of inner peace. It is great for soothing anxiety and depression. It enhances your ability to tune into your purpose and feel fulfilment. A very gentle oil great for tuning into your intuition, inner wisdom, allowing laughter and love into your life.

GINGER is for warmth and confidence. It is grounding, soothing and calming. A physical & spiritual cleanse, it is emotionally lifting.  It promotes self-confidence, courage and clarity. It is warming to the body, mind and spirit making it great for vitality and endurance on all levels.

Use this blend in your aromatherapy diffuser or as an inhalation. For your aromatherapy diffuser use as directed, usually a few drops is plenty! As an inhalation, inhale from the bottle by waving slowly  back and forth under your nose or place a drop on a tissue to inhale throughout the day.

Some other things I love about Winter are…

  • The time to slow down and reflect.
  • The feeling of lying in bed snuggled under warm heavy blankets.
  • Fresh vegetable juices with lots of ginger, turmeric and lemon.
  • A glass of red wine and raw chocolate.
  • The fashions – boots, coats, gloves, beanies and scarves! I love them all.
