How I Get Organised and Set Goals

How I Get Organised and Set Goals

Oh where to start?

I’m generally a very organised person in life as well as in my business. I’m one of those people who can’t think straight if things are a mess or even a little untidy!!! To me organisation equals calm. If things are tidy my mind has clarity and I can get on with things.

So I guess that’s where my organisation starts

I tidy up, declutter, get rid of stuff, put stuff away, clean. I give everything a place and make everything look and feel nice.

And that’s what I’ve been doing in every area of my life over the last couple of months.

You see in mid February I realised how damn tired I was after a very emotional year last year.

I’d had a big 2018 planning day at the end of last year but I actually hadn’t taken action on anything! Which isn’t like me at all. So I decided to take some time to rest and take the pressure off ‘doing’. I didn’t stop working in and on by business I just put aside my big 2018 to do list and deadlines I had set myself.

I let go. I took a little holiday. I reclalibrated.

Now I’m back – organised, energised and inspired!

Sometimes it’s important to take a step back. Sometimes that’s what you need. We don’t have to be achieving all the time.

As a result I’m changing up the way I do my planning. Here’s how it looks…

Instead of doing my major planning at the beginning of the year I’m now going to do it mid year, the beginning of the financial year. I’ll still do some new year planning as this always feels like a great time to review and reassess my goals and intentions in my business as well as my personal life. But this new timing for my planning makes sense for me right now in terms of my business.

The truth is you can do your planning at any time. I’m always doing mini reviews and updates to my goals and intentions.

If you’re feeling like this year is slipping away and you haven’t achieved any of your goals, it’s honestly not too late!

So let’s break it down.

Here’s how I do my annual planning and set goals…

I take a look at what I’ve done in the last 12 months and how I feel about those things.
Am I pleased? How can I improve? What did I learn?

I celebrate the wins and acknowledge the challenges and things I could have done better.

I think about what I’m loving and want to continue doing and also what I no longer desire in my life and business.

I choose a guiding word for the year ahead (I’ll keep this one for my new year intention setting). This year it’s COURAGE.

I set my goals and intentions for each area of my life – business and personal.

I write all this out as I believe it makes it more real to see it on paper. I have it to refer to and to inspire and remind me where I’m headed.

Then I plan out the steps it will take to achieve each goal. This may seem like a lot to do, but breaking each goal into steps makes it easy to work out how long each goal will take to reach and what help you may need to achieve it. I recommend you start with your top 3 goals first.

From here I work out a schedule of when I’m going to do things. I plan this out monthly and then I block out the time in my calendar.

Believe me when I say, if it’s not in your calendar it probably won’t happen. It’s also super important to treat these calendar appointments as you would any other appointment. You’re not going to cancel a doctors appointment so don’t cancel that appointment with yourself – keeping it means you’re one step closer to your goal.

And please remember to schedule time for YOU – we all need fun and relaxation to thrive. I also try to leave extra ‘catch up’ time in my calendar for when unexpected things pop up that impact my time – it gives me some breathing space and reduces my stress.

To make it all easier I have some useful resources that I love using…
  • I have a diary/planner with monthly and weekly layouts – I use this for keeping track of what I get done each day, my weekly to do list and a monthly overview of what’s going on in my business and personal life.
  • I have a journal for my intentions and goals, jotting down inspiration and ideas as they come to me plus lists galore – like books to read, podcasts, cafes, hiking trails etc etc etc.
  • And I have a notepad for meetings and general note taking.
  • I’ve just discovered a workbook that looks great – it’s the sort of thing I’d love to create and is very close to the process I use for my planning. It’s called the Artist Of Life Workbook. I’ve only just received it and have started using it this quarter so I’ll keep you updated on how that goes.
  • I also have a gorgeous pen along with this beautiful stationery – together they inspire me to create beautiful meaningful things. Yes kikki.K is one of my favorite shops!!!
  • Digitally I use iCal for my client and personal appointments and Evernote for taking notes on the go. I use Canva for designing social media posts. My iPhone and a Fuji X-A5 camera for taking videos and photos.

So that’s really it. It’s kinda simple but it does require ACTION.

ACTION – that’s the key to success. You can have the best, most exciting plans ever but without action they’re never going happen! Taking small steps consistently and knowing that big goals take time really helps to keep me on track.

And I also believe it’s really helpful to have an accountability buddy to check in with regularly, along with a coach or mentor to guide and support you.

Let’s recap the main points…

  • Declutter, tidy up and make your space a place you love to be in.
  • Write down your intentions and goals.
  • Plan and schedule the steps to get to each goal.
  • Include time for you (super important!).
  • Take consistent action.
  • Review, reassess and update regularly.
  • Use resources that inspire and support you.

I hope this has been helpful.

The One Thing You Need For Effective Self Care

The One Thing You Need For Effective Self Care

Self Care – I know! – It’s something I bang on about a LOT! But that’s because I truly believe it’s important for your wellbeing and health. Plus it will allow you to live the live you desire without the stress and exhaustion – well, it will at least keep it to an absolute minimum.

But what is self care and how can you make sure it’s effective and meaningful?

The Oxford online dictionary defines self care as the practice of taking action to preserve or improve one’s own health.

I believe self care means taking responsibility for nourishing your mind, body and soul. It should be something you do consistently, not just when you’re stressed and exhausted and need some relief from what feels like the constant pressure you’re under.

If you incorporate self care rituals into your daily life you’ll cope much better with everyday pressures and extra stress when it arises. It’s the choices you make today, tomorrow, the next day, those cumulative choices, that will ensure long term wellbeing.

Please don’t beat yourself up if, at the moment, you’re not doing what you know fills you up. But if you’re feeling like you don’t have time for you then it’s likely that’s exactly what you need and it’s time to reassess your self care.

Self care is more than just a bubble bath or meditating daily. It’s not just a regular massage, a yearly retreat or an afternoon in nature. It can be all of these things and more! Or something completely different.

For me it’s regular massage and facials, daily essential oils, good books, music, hiking in nature, meditation, time with Andrew and my friends, and a glass of champagne + raw chocolate whenever I feel like it!

The thing is, you get to decide what self care is for you. It’s different for everyone.

But there is one thing that you absolutely must have for effective self care.

S E L F  L O V E

Why is this so damn important?

Because without it, whatever you’re self care rituals are, they won’t be as meaningful.

If you’re doing this ‘self care thing’ because it’s what you ‘should’ be doing or what you’ve been told to do, it’s likely not coming from a place of love and care. You’ll be less likely to be consistent and more likely to self-sabotage.

Self care is not just another item on your to do list. It’s a non-negotiable that refills your mind, body and soul in a way nothing else can.

So when you put your self care rituals in place choose things that really do nurture and nourish your mind, body and soul.

Make sure they are things that really fill you up and rejuvenate you on all levels.
And ask yourself…
Why am I doing it?
Is it coming from a place of self love?
Am I really looking after me?
Do I really feel like I deserve to be looked after on a deep level?

These questions can be hard to answer. Grab a piece of paper or your journal and see what comes up.

The old cliche – you can’t love anybody else if you don’t love yourself – has become a cliche for a reason! Because it’s absolutely true.

I’m here to tell you – you are totally worth it!

Looking after you on a deep level, consistently, allows you not only to feel great but to be there more fully for those you love. You simply cannot give from an empty cup so keep yours overflowing.

Become your own best friend and treat yourself as such – with love.

I’d love to know your self care rituals. And let me know who you go with the journaling questions too!

Love and Peace, Dee xxx

The COAL Concept

The COAL Concept

I wanted to share with you a concept that my Doctor told me about last year. It’s called COAL and I think it’s a really helpful way to look at things.

So, what is C O A L?

Well, it’s an acronym that stands for Curiousity Openness Acceptance Love. And it’s a concept you can apply to your life each and every day.

I did an little bit of research (thank you Google) and found that the acronym was invented by Dr. Daniel Siegel to describe the qualities of mindfulness.

I think it describes the relationship you can build with yourself and the world around you. It can help you grow and lead a happier more fulfilled life by being more present and mindful.

Let’s talk about each one separately and how they can support you in your everyday life.

CURIOUSITY

A great way to approach life is with a sense of curiousity. Ask questions, look at things from different angles, get interested in what’s happening. Look at things without judgment but rather curiosity. When we do this we bring a very different feeling to our days.

OPENNESS

Be open to opportunities, new concepts, opinions and different ways of looking at things. When we are more open it leads to more choice and variety in our lives.

ACCEPTANCE

To accept the things that you don’t have control over and can’t change. To accept where you are right now. This doesn’t mean you have to stay where you are, however acceptance of your current situation allows you to decide not only where to go next but how.

LOVE

To cultivate self love. To give love. To do things with love. To allow yourself to receive love. Being kind and compassionate to yourself and others. When we come to life with love we allow more joy into our lives.

Each of these things all feed into each other too.

Curiousity brings with it more openness, acceptance and the ability for love.

Openness feeds our curiousity and helps us accept and grow as well as allow more love in our lives.

Acceptance allows us to cultivate love and therefore be more open and curious.

Love for yourself and others certainly allows us more acceptance and leads to more openness and curiousity.

I think of the COAL Concept as a form of self care. If we have a solid self-care foundation we can cope much better when life throws us unexpected stresses.

Are there any situations or areas of your life where you can apply the COAL concept right now?
Will it help you be more mindful and present?

Let me know in the comments below, I’d love to hear your thoughts.

My Guiding Word for 2018

My Guiding Word for 2018

Last year was certainly a challenging year. Full of highs and lows, challenges, successes and lots and lots of healing.

HEALING was my word for 2017 and when I chose it I certainly didn’t think the year ahead would bring so much.

As I reflect on all that was 2017 I can see there is still a lot to integrate and I look forward to allowing this to happen.

Life happens for us, rather than to us, and it shapes who we are. But it’s good to remember that who we are today doesn’t have to be who we become. We have the power to make any change we desire.

And as I welcome 2018 with open arms I set the intention of COURAGE in my life.

This is my guiding word, my beacon of light as I move forward in my life and my business.

courage is not the absence of fear

but the ability to act in spite of fear

– Mark Twain

Courage

In 2018 I strive for…

The courage to invite strength, resilience and confidence to reside within me.
The courage to be me and not worry about what people think.
The courage to share what I’ve been through and am going through in order to help others.
The courage to speak out about what I believe in. To speak up. To be heard. To not always take the back seat.
The courage to listen more, reflect more, learn more, change and grow.
The courage to heal more deeply.
The courage to listen to my intuition each and every day.
The courage to really tune in to my body, nourish it with the food it needs and nurture it in the best possible ways.
The courage to allow the energy and enthusiasm that is just under the surface to come out and shine.
The courage to laugh more. To cry more. To feel more.
The courage to be me, fully and unapologetically.

I invite all this and more into my life for 2018 in order to support you on a deeper level. Because when we commit to ourselves first it allows us to give more. And to give in a free, open and generous way.

Do you have a guiding word for the year ahead? I’d love to hear what it is. Share with me in the comments below.

What If You Can?

What If You Can?

What If You Can

What if you can make that change?
What if you can do that thing?
What if you can become that person?

What would that mean for you?

The truth is you can.

It may take time.
It may take persistence.

You get to choose.

You can make the decision.
To do or not to do.
To take action.
One step at a time.

How would it feel to live the life you desire?
How would it feel to be doing the things you desire?
How would it feel to be fully you?

When you live as the person you desire to be you become that person and not only is that great for you but everyone around you benefits.

When you allow yourself to be fully YOU that is a gift to the world.

That inspires real connection.
That inspires others to do the same.
That inspires true joy and happiness.

I urge you to grab a piece of paper and pen and answer the questions above.

Do your answers awaken a desire to let the world see who you really are?

It’s scary I know! But you can make a plan and start taking steps today.

Make that change.
Do that thing.
Become that person.

It is possible.

Create A Circle Of Support

Create A Circle Of Support

On my recent getaway to Cradle Mountain with Andrew – hubby and Mr maa for those of you who don’t him – I was struck by just how important it is to be surrounded by people who support and believe in you without question.

I’m not sure how silly this is going to sound, but here goes…

It was a beautiful day in Cradle Mountain, we were on holidays, breakfast and coffee were enjoyed and we ventured to Dove Lake for a hike. We were going to go to Marions Lookout but on a whim we decided to do Hansons Peak instead (we’d done Marions in the past).

It looked like quite a climb, but surely it wasn’t as steep as it looked! Turns out parts of it were quite steep with long drops over the side! And I got scared!!!

I had a mini anxiety attack at one point where the path was rocky and I couldn’t look to my right as I was afraid of falling off the edge…I just kept going, looking straight ahead and trying not to freak out!

Ok, made that bit! Phew!

And then a steep rock loomed above. There was a chain to hold onto and pull yourself up. I started up, following Andrew slowly. And then we came to a flat rock face with very few foot holes…and short legs weren’t helping!!!

I completely lost it – there was no way I was going to be able to get up up this bit! My whole body was shaking and my head was telling me this was as far as I was going – I couldn’t wait to be back down the bottom. I literally couldn’t move!

And this is when my one man support team stepped up to the plate, believing that I could do it and patiently waiting while my panic and anxiety dissipated. I believe that took about 15 minutes!

Needless to say I made it up that rock and to the top of Hansons Peak and boy was it worth it!

Check out the view…

There was a point when I truly didn’t think I could do it but I had someone by my side that believed I could – sometimes that’s what we need.

Actually we need to be surrounded by supportive people who believe in us all the time. This is what really hit me while sitting atop Hansons Peak taking photos of the stunningly beautiful view.

CREATE A CIRCLE OF SUPPORT

People who lift us up, cheer us on and celebrate us are essential to our wellbeing. We need to let people do this for us. As we do for them. We don’t have to do all the giving.

Accepting help from someone is one of the most beautiful gifts you can give them.

Take a look around you.
Do you have the support and love that you need?
If not what are some steps you can take to bring that into your life.
And how can you truly nurture those that you do have in your life?

I’d love to hear what you think…head to the comments below and let me know your thoughts.

Don’t Ditch Self Care When It Gets Too Busy

Don’t Ditch Self Care When It Gets Too Busy

WHOA!

The last couple of weeks have been exhausting to say the least. Yes, there are people out there having worse weeks for sure and that’s important to remember. But it’s also important to remember that if you feel like you’ve had a tiring week, then for you, you have! It’s time to acknowledge it and look after you.

Don't ditch self care

Rather than ditching self care, step up your self care to meet what’s going on in your life.

Often self care is the first thing to go when we’re busy, stressed and overwhelmed. It slips down the list because there are ‘too many things to do first’. But I’m here to tell you that this is the exact time that it’s super important to take time for you.

JUST. DO. IT.

MAKE. IT. HAPPEN.

Because if you don’t you’ll just spiral into more overwhelm, stress and tiredness, even anxiety and depression. And ultimately burnout. Which can lead to an array of health issues.

You’ve probably been there before…and it wasn’t worth it was it?

It takes practise but next time you catch yourself putting your self care second, stop and review the situation. Make some time for yourself before it’s too late.

Block out some time in your calendar for you. Stick to it just as you would if it was your best friend. Ask for help if you need it. Remember just how important it is for your wellbeing.

The washing, the ironing, the shopping, the cooking, all the things that ‘need to the done’ aren’t going anywhere…they can be put second but your self care simply can not.

The best time for self care is when there isn’t time.

If it seems there is no perfect time to stop, then that time is NOW!

Do you practise consistent self care? Head to the comments below and let me know.

2017 is for HEALING mind, body and soul

2017 is for HEALING mind, body and soul

Well hello there 2017. I’m excited to see what you have in store for me.

I had a lovely week off between Christmas and New Year. Since I’ve been back at work I’ve been setting my goals and intentions and doing some planning for 2017.

I’m setting the intention for HEALING.

Healing

At the beginning of each year I usually choose a guiding word, sometimes 2 or 3, to set the tone for the year ahead.

This year I had a few floating around in my mind – give, self-esteem, strength and confidence. I couldn’t quite settle on one.

Then it came to me, it was all down to HEALING.

Healing for myself. Helping those close to me heal. Guiding my clients to discover their own healing process.

Healing on all levels – mind, body and soul. Bringing each aspect back into alignment.

I’ve seen some friends go through major trauma and changes recently. I did what I could at the time even though it didn’t always feel like enough and I’d like to continue to help in 2017.

I know some of my clients are also going through major shifts. I’m supporting them, through my health and lifestyle coaching, to create a plan for 2017 that works for them.

And I’ve personally had 2 things occur in the last 12 months that have made me question so many things about myself – my value, my self worth, my place in the world. I’m taking steps to work through it – Kineseology and a very intuitive Acupuncturist is helping a lot. More talking is on the agenda. More self care. More mindset shifts. More focus on the positive. One amazing thing is that my move to Canberra – which on reflection was huge and overwhelming as well as exciting – has really shown me how wonderful and caring people are and maybe I deserve that.

If healing is something you can relate to. If it’s something tugging at your heart I want you to know…

Healing is a process.

Healing is different for everyone.

Healing takes time.

So 2017, along with healing I’m starting to think bigger and broader. I can feel exciting things in the air for my business and my life.

My Curious Hearts Retreat Experience

My Curious Hearts Retreat Experience

Well hello there…it’s been a while!

Blogging has taken a back seat as I’ve been working on my business, moving house (again!) and much more.

It’s been a big year, both on a personal and business level. Unsettling and upsetting and even painful in some ways but ultimately fun, exciting and expansive.

After attending, and speaking at, the absolutely beaufitul Curious Hearts Retreat by Becca Posterino last weekend I thought it was the perfect time to start sharing with you again.

Curious Hearts Retreat

Last Sunday was the first time I’ve ever attended a day retreat and it was amazing. To stop and just be was just what my soul needed. And to share it with 10 other lovely women was special. There was such a beautiful energy present.

The day began with yoga – I haven’t done much yoga since moving to Canberra and my body loved it!

Yoga

Becca then led us through a seated meditation – WOW! What insights! The main message that came through was LOVE MORE, GIVE MORE and FORGIVE. The perfect message for me as 2016 draws to a close.

Next up we took what Becca had told us about meditation and moved into a walking meditation. How lovely…a walk in nature around Lake Burley Griffin. Being fully present the colours of nature came alive – the green of the trees and surrounding hills, the bright blue of the sky against the beautiful white wispy clouds. It was so refreshing.

After a scrumptious vegan lunch we took some time to journal. This isn’t something I do often and again some lovely insights came through. My vision for 2017 is slowly coming together and it’s all about ease and flow and acceptance.

Then, I got to speak a little about my passion, Aromatherapy. This was the first time I’ve spoken to a group of people, and while I know I have a lot to improve upon, I really enjoyed it. I created a Curious Hearts signature blend that I shared with everyone as well as a little bit about blending and what to look for when purchasing essential oils.

Aromatherapy Talk

We finished the day with a Yin yoga session which was just perfect.

I felt so rejuvenated and balanced. It was a huge reminder to take time out more regularly. I always say that consistency is key to creating the lifestyle you desire and this goes for STOPPING as well as DOING.

Have you been to a yoga retreat? Head to the comments below and tell me about your experience.
